Amston Lake

Located between the towns of Hebron, Lebanon, and Colchester, Connecticut, Amston Lake covers 186 acres and offers you crystal clear waters, lovely sand beaches, a duck pond and seven lake access point for boat launching. It's a private lake, and no gas motorboats are allowed, which helps keep the waters clean and fresh. It's also a shallow lake that's excellent for fishing largemouth bass, calico bass, rock bass, pickerel, eels, bullheads, pumpkinseeds, yellow perch, bluegills, green sunfish and white perch. The lack of powerboats means you'll enjoy truly serene and peaceful fishing, canoeing, sailing and kayaking. Several parts of the shoreline are undeveloped, meaning you'll see plenty of wildlife on the shores. You can also enjoy plenty of off-lake activities as well. The Air-Line Trail State Park is a 50=mile long hiking trail that follows an abandoned railroad bed. Biking, hiking, horseback riding or running on the trail will take you past Raymond Brook Marsh, Salmon River State Forest, Grayville Falls Park and Amston Lake Dam. In the winter, you can use the trail for cross-country skiing. In the State Forest, you can go snowmobiling. Hartford is only 30 miles away, so if you yearn for the conveniences of the city, they’re easily within reach. Hartford is a large metropolitan area filled with all sorts of activities for young adults, families with children, couples and retirees. Amston Lake has a long history, dating back to Chief Uncas of Last of the Mohicans fame. Chief Uncas and his people hunted extensively in the area. In 1735, the first dam was built to power a gristmill. The area grew in popularity, and at around 1900, Charles Ams purchased a factory settlement that had been established at the lake. He promptly renamed it after himself, Amston, and attempted to produce the Ams-Stirling automobile at Amston. The business lasted only two years and produced 24 vehicles. Ams did successfully establish duck ponds to raise ducks. One of these ponds is still in existence. Amston Lake is still completely private, which makes it an ideal location for a quiet, relaxing getaway.
