Lake Wallenpaupack was given its name by Native Americans when it was still just a creek. Wallenpaupack, which means "The Stream of Swift and Slow Water," became a lake in 1927 when it was dammed to form the third largest body of water in Pennsylvania. Nicknamed "The Pack," Wallenpaupack covers 5,700 acres and offers 52 miles of shoreline in the Pocono Mountains. Those visiting "The Pack" during warm months like to partake in boating, water sports, and scuba diving in the lake. Wallenpaupack is heavily stocked with striped bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, and catfish. Smallmouth bass is by far the most prevalent species, with spring and fall being the best months to hook some for yourself. During the winter months, visitors to Wallenpaupack enjoy ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing at the nearby Tanglewood Ski Area.
