Seneca Lake, NY

Did you mean Seneca Lake, OH?

A Seneca Lake vacation home is the perfect spot to enjoy the endless recreational opportunities and vast wilderness of Central New York. Named from the Iroquois word “Assiniki,” which means “place of stone,” Seneca Lake is the second-deepest lake in the U.S., when measuring by depth below sea level. The lake is fed by underground springs and as such is kept in constant motion, never freezing during the wintertime. In the summer, the lake warms to a pleasant temperature and has low boat traffic, making for a peaceful, serene time out on the water.

Seneca Lake Information

Find your next lake vacation home on Seneca Lake, the deepest and widest of the 11 Finger Lakes of Central New York. The immense size of the lake (42,800 surface acres) affects climate in the area and makes it an excellent spot for grape growing. This has led to the Finger Lakes region being known for having the best wineries in all of New York. Seneca Lake Park has a swimming beach, concession stand, picnic shelters, hiking trails, an amphitheater, and playground. The full-service marina has rentals and a restaurant open all year. The best fishing at Seneca Lake is undoubtedly lake trout. The National Lake Trout Derby is held every year over Memorial Day weekend. Get more information about Seneca Lake here.
Another must-see while visiting Seneca Lake are the Painted Rocks found on cliff faces towards the southern end of the lake. As the story goes, an American general chased a group of renegade Native Americans up to the cliffs where they escaped, only to return later and create the original paintings found near the bottom of the cliffs. The giant American flag and other images were painted on Seneca Lake later, in 1929. If you decide to vacation in Seneca Lake, why not check out one of the 29 wineries found in the surrounding areas? Most of the wineries are located on, or just off, Route 14, which stretches the entire length of the western side of Seneca Lake. Take a tour, enjoy a wine tasting event, or just relax and take in the scenery. Check out this Seneca Lake Winery Association page for more information. When autumn comes around, escape to a Seneca Lake vacation rental and watch the beautiful fall colors change.
