Donner Lake
A beautiful indigo jewel, Donner Lake is a California favorite for year-round fun. You’ll find well-maintained campsites in Donner Memorial State Park and trails for hiking, biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding in the Donner Summit area up Old Highway 40. A public boat ramp and public docks along the north side of the water and a public beach at West End invite one and all to swim, sail, water ski, and fish.

| Donner Lake Information |
 | | Donner Lake itself is the pure embodiment of an alpine body of water, with views of the Sierra Nevada Range and the Tahoe National Forest. The town of Truckee surrounds the lake, and thus gives visitors access to a great Northern Californian community with a small town charm. The lake is named after the infamous Donner Party, which became stranded in the region in 1847 and resorted to drastic means of survival (there’s even a memorial and museum nearby for you history buffs). |
| The lake is sometimes up to 6 degrees warmer than Tahoe during the summer, so you really can go swimming, sailing, and water skiing without fear of icy cold waters. Nearby at West End Beach you can enjoy the sun and surf while staying dry, and for some great views, check out Lakeview Canyon, which is just a short hike away from the lake itself. Donner Lake vacation homes are available for rent now, and provide the ideal experience in Northern California. |
